Tall boots. Just-right hems.
FIT & STYLE / THE PROPORTION GUIDE
Tall boots draw a strong vertical line. A skirt can continue that line, cover part of it or leave a gap above the shaft. Start with the proportion you like, then check the measurements that make it practical.
Short skirts: give the shaft a clear role
A shorter hem puts the boot on display. A plain skirt can make embroidery, slouching or buckle details the main focus. Try a straight denim skirt with the Prairie Low Heel tall boots, then balance the long lower silhouette with a relaxed shirt or cardigan.
Leave enough space between the hem and opening for both to move. Sit down and walk before deciding on a length: the relationship changes as you move.
Midi skirts: choose a gap or an overlap
A midi hem may stop above the shaft or cover the opening. Both can work. A small gap gives each piece a clear edge; an overlap creates a more continuous line. Avoid a hem that catches exactly on the top of the boot every time you take a step.
With a fuller skirt, a pointed toe can remain visible beneath the movement. With a narrower skirt, check that the shaft leaves enough room for your stride. The Midnight Slouch tall boots add texture below a simple hem without requiring an equally detailed top.
Measure foot length first
- Place paper on a level floor. Wear the socks you expect to wear with the boots.
- Stand naturally and mark the back of your heel and the end of your longest toe.
- Measure between the marks. Repeat on the other foot and use the longer result.
- Compare it with the reference on that particular product page, including whether the measurement refers to the foot or the shoe.
Use the style’s own chart rather than a universal conversion. We keep label sizes visible and show US references only where supported. If no length reference is available, ask about the style before choosing.
Measure the calf and check the height
Wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of your calf without pulling it tight. If you plan to tuck in jeans, measure over them as well. Note the height from the floor to where you’d like the shaft to end. Compare only with measurements documented on the product page; an opening circumference at one height is not a measurement of the whole shaft.
When a boot’s calf circumference is not specified, don’t assume it is a wide-calf style or that a photo predicts the fit on your leg. Send us the style name and your measurements if you need help deciding.
Keep the first try-on clean
Try shoes on a clean indoor surface with the packaging nearby. Walk, sit and bend your knees to assess the shape and shaft. Keep soles and all included items intact while you decide. Our 30-day return policy explains the condition requirements and next steps.
